Windstorms

The PREVIEW Windstorms Service aims to serve
both aspects:

- Climate statistics on frequency of Windstorms;
- Forecasts of Probability of storms in next 5 days.

Uncertainty in Weather Forecasts, which is a major issue in meteorology, has been addressed and has been as much as possible clearly explained to European Union Civil Protections’ experts. In particular, the ensemble forecasts have been presented as the best tools to estimate uncertainty.

PREVIEW-Windstorms forecast, warning system and climate data have been presented to the audience and demonstrated on a live system through the project website (www.preview-windstorms.eu). In addition, decision-making with uncertainty has been explained to the experts as well as the use of low probabilities.
Concerning extreme windstorms events, it has been recommended to pay attention very carefully to low probabilities.
